  • Scrapbook Shaker Box and Beaded Wire Words

    When Tiare first started making scrapbooks, her skills were somewhat amateurish. "Oh boy! I was the queen of tacky and the queen of mistakes," she said. Now, she has truly matured into a sophisticated and "clean" mixed-media scrapbooker, as she shows with this shaker box and beaded wire wording.

    Materials:

    album
    paper trimmer
    adhesive
    black pen
    straight scissors
    card stock
    24- or 26-gauge wire
    beads
    other embellishments
    scrap page protector or acetate sheet
    square and other punches
    mounting tape

    Steps:

    1. Create the theme and basic set-up for your scrapbook. Decide which pictures you will work with first, and have them in order. Choose colors and embellishments based on the colors in the photographs and other elements, or emotions you wish to evoke. Start to work on the layout of the photos by placing them in different ways on the page (figure A).

    2. Mat photos with paper or card stock and place as chosen.

    3. Create the title and embellishments, making sure to leave space for journaling (figure B). Then work on the layout by trying different ways of placing them on the page. Once satisfied, adhere the page elements, pictures, title and accents to the page. Continue to follow this process for each set of two to five pictures until the scrapbook is complete. Tip: Tiare does her opening page last, because she gets inspired by what is in the book and will draw from the completed pages to come up with the title page.

    4. To create the shaker box: Choose one or two papers you will use to create the shaker. Punch a small square (or other shape, as shown) (figure C) and then a large square over the smaller square to create a window. Next punch another solid square, all from the paper of choice.

    5. Add a square piece of page protector to the window. Then add mounting tape around the page protector, making sure it touches the card stock/patterned paper and adheres the two together (figure D).

    6. Next, pour in punches, beads etc. (figure E). Lastly, remove mounting tape strip to reveal adhesive and adhere the solid square to close the shaker.

    7. To create the wire wording (figure F): Choose your wire color and gauge. I use 24- to 26-gauge wire. Choose the beads you'd like to embellish the wire with.

    8. Next, to guide you, write out the word in cursive. Then simply bend the wire as you would write. Once the word is finished, and throughout the process if desired, add a couple of beads to each letter or in between letters or to every other letter (figure G). Be sure to leave an extra inch of wire at the beginning of the word and the end to secure to the paper.

    9. Attach the word using adhesive or by placing a tiny hole near the beginning and end of the word and threading the ends of the wire through the paper and twist to the back to secure.
