Project by Jordan Kraft from Brooklyn, N.Y.Jordan truly appreciates the everyday heroes she has met in the travels and experiences throughout her young life. In this project, she shows how she pays tribute to them--by silkscreening images of them onto clothing like this hip and stylish skirt.
Materials:
window or other screen suitable for silkscreening
photo emulsion
high-watt bulb
acetate print out of image chosen
fabric
thread
iron
ink
squeegee
Steps:1. Coat screen with photo emulsion (chemical) and place in dark area (bathroom) to dry.
2. Place dried/coated screen on black surface underneath a high-watt bulb, and place acetate print-out of image on top of the screen (figure A).
3. Expose the screen for 45 minutes to an hour.
4. Wash out unexposed emulsion, creating the stencil or finished screen (figure B). Allow time to dry.
5. Cut out fabric with pattern.
6. Using prepped screen, print on the fabric. Clean out screens.
7. Iron fabric to cure the ink.
8. Sew fabric into a skirt.
9. Print out label/bio from the computer and sew onto garment.
Note: Jordan includes the bio of the person on the garment with each creation. It's her way of promoting whatever it is that these "legends" are doing.
