Project by Emily Kuntz from Huntington Beach, Calif.Materials:
color photo
photo transparency
soap mold
glycerin
microwave
self-adhesive laminating sheet - optional
Steps:
1. At a copy store, get a transparency made from a color photo on white paper. You can also print onto a transparency from your home printer.
Note: Make sure the transparencies you get are compatible with your type of printer. Since most computer ink is not waterproof, you will need to put a piece of self-adhesive laminating sheet over the side the ink is on. This step is not necessary if you have the transparency made at a copy center.
2. Cut the picture to fit the soap mold (figure A).
3. Melt the glycerin in a cup in the microwave according to the directions.
4. Pour the glycerin into the mold until it is about a quarter full (figure B).
5. Let it cool. Once it's set, place the transparency in the mold, and re-melt and pour the rest of the glycerin to the top of the mold. The transparency will float up a bit.
6. Let it cool before unmolding.
