    Lisa Vickery was terrified when she first took a woodworking class. Now, she absolutely loves using her power tools to make things like this gorgeous wooden jewelry organizer.

    Materials:

    1" x 3" and 1" x 2-1/2" poplar boards
    shaker pegs (for tops of cases)
    tie pegs (across bottom of cases)
    hardware cloth (screening)
    single-overlay cabinet hinges
    cabinet knobs of choice
    saw-tooth hangers
    latex paint
    paint brushes
    pencil
    sponge
    acrylic top coat sealant
    hammer
    chop saw
    router
    drill press
    hand press
    wire cutters
    staple gun

    Steps:

    1. For construction: Prime lumber.

    2. Cut wood to correct length using chop saw in customized tray with stops set for each length.

    3. Using router, cut "ditch" for screen to lay in.

    4. Pre-drill holes for ring pegs using drill press (figure A).

    5. Using hand press, assemble frames.

    6. Drill holes for necklace/bracelet pegs using drill press.

    7. Drill and countersink hole for decorative knob.

    8. Hand-sand rough edges.

    9. Hammer pegs into pre-drilled holes--top only!

    10. To paint, prime wood prior to cutting. Paint two coats of base color (figure B).

    11. "Sketch" in basic vein lines with artist's brush and ochre paint. Soften lines with brush and water (figure C).

    12. Press on darker color (burgundy) over breaks in veins with fingers. Soften with brush and water.

    13. Press in original vein color over burgundy to add depth and contrast.

    14. Sponge on glaze/paint mixture to reduce flatness and add depth.

    15. Add lower pegs and door knob and paint.

    16. Paint edges silver.

    17. Varnish (figure D).

    18. Later, dilute base paint and paint back of frame.

    19. To assemble, cut screen to size using template and wire cutters.

    20. Attach screen to frame using staple gun (figure E).

    21. Join frames with self-closing hinges using cordless drill (figure F).

    22. Attach picture-hanging hardware to back of frame and glue on label.

    23. Attach hang tag.
