There are three things that every local haunt needs to keep its patrons happy: a friendly atmosphere, a great bartender and a pool table. John and Jimmy DiResta help a friend achieve this trifecta by building a pool table for the Long Island bar he owns. Jimmy constructs most of the table using micro-density fiberboard (MDF) because it is sturdy and inexpensive. Slate is traditionally used for strength, but in an unconventional but innovative move he fits the underside with a honey-comb grid to preserve the top from warping. Jimmy's special touches include built-in compartments for the rack, cue sticks and billiard ball tray. Walnut railings and a bright felt cover with gold trim add a touch of class.
