Wood sculptor Peter Ortel demonstrates how to carve a caricature with character -- a New York City firefighter. Ortel grew up in the Northeast and made his career as a New York City fireman. Since his retirement from the fire department, he has devoted himself to woodcarving. He specializes in caricature carvings, capturing the faces, body shapes, expression and gesture of the human character using wood as his creative medium. He won "Best of Show" honors in the Affiliated International Woodcarver's competition -- a contest that included more than 500 other entrants. In fact, he became the first carver specializing in caricatures to ever hold that title.
