Making a New Chair Look Old
Antiques have wear marks — lighter areas in the wood where it's clearly worn or dents and scratches from use. Here's how to give new furniture that same look of years of wear.

    • If the chair is already stained, remove the clear coat off the top. That will let you add more stain or more color to the wood.
    • Use a bicycle chain to distress the wood. Just basically whip that chair! You can use other "tools" as well: a brick, keys, even a meat tenderizer. The goal is to make the chair look like it's been through a lot. Don't be afraid to hit hard, either. That's what it'll take.

    • Be sure to hit the edges to simulate worm holes. Drop a brick on it a few times.
    • You also can create worm holes with a 1/16-inch drill bit. Just drill four or five holes close together in a natural-looking pattern.
    • Clean off all the dust from the distressing.
    • Use three different colors of stain. Apply the darkest shade first around the edges and in the corners. That will make the chair look like it has collected dirt.
    • Wipe off the stain and blend in any streaks.
    • The second stain goes right over the first one. Blend it in.
    • Finish up with the lightest shake, followed by a clear coat.
