Building a Picnic Table
Patterns for picnic tables are available in home-improvement magazines and books. You can choose between a table that has the seats attached and one that has the benches separate. The three-piece tables are easier to store at the end of the season. You don't need a lot of fancy tools, either. You'll need a measuring tape, a combination square, a hammer, and a power miter box. You'll also need some carriage bolts and screws for putting all the pieces together, as well as some exterior glue for the cleats and the top pieces.
Here's a big tip: Don't start your weekend off by going to the lumberyard. Take a little time earlier in the week to select your lumber and order it, so that you can get it delivered by Saturday. That way you don't spend Saturday morning shopping. You may be able to get the lumberyard to cut the wood to length for you, too.Once you've assembled the table, you can put a stain on it. If it's made of cedar, though, you can leave it alone.
