The second episode of the
DIY Lighting Design workshop focuses on more modern construction, with a basic contractor-grade finish to a lovely bedroom and sitting room. The contractor installed can lights too close to the four corners of the bedroom and nothing in the sitting room. The homeowners have beautiful furniture, but have placed just a few lamps in somewhat of a haphazard fashion. There is no separation between bedroom and sitting area, and the trey ceiling over the bed is lost in a wash of white paint and no lighting. A wet bar exists in the bedroom, but appears to be just a dark space on one side of the room. Ineffective light in the sitting room makes it a room where no one actually sits. Designer Shane Meder demonstrates how to bring light and separation to both rooms through the creative use of light, from rope lighting in the trey ceiling to common sense placement of bedside lamps with regard to size and height. He also emphasizes the use of paint and mirrors as light sources in both areas.
