The first challenge in this first episode of
DIY Lighting Design is the living room and dining room of a beautifully renovated 1920's bungalow. The house's North-South exposure, covered porch and close proximity to its neighbors allow very little in the way of natural light. The living room also functions as entryway and transitional passage from the front door into the rest of the house. It features a stunning large stone fireplace as the centerpiece of the room with a glassed-in bookcase adjacent to it. With only a ceiling fanlight and one lamp in the room, the fireplace gives the room a cold, dark presence and doesn't really offer the feel of a living room. It seems more of a hallway into the dining room. The dining room has beautiful dark hardwood furniture and high windows on one side of the room that radiate just a small amount of light. This room, too, feels somewhat stark and uninviting for as beautiful a space as it is. Lighting Design's challenge is to 'lighten up" both rooms, providing a sense of warmth and space for the living room, and an inviting warm geniality to the dining room. Designer Douglas Weiss brings his expertise to this episode.
