When wife Tami and husband Chris bought their 1914 house, they and their two little kids loved the historic character of the place. There were beautiful built-in hutches, maple floors, hand-carved staircases, leaded glass — and then there was the kitchen. The drop ceiling was falling down, cheesy cabinets were delaminating and on the floor was indoor-outdoor carpeting, stained and frayed. We'll take it all out and start from scratch to create a kitchen that will do the rest of the home proud.
In this second of four parts, we're in the process of recapturing the kitchen's lost glory as we bring back it's classic prairie style and add in the modern conveniences. We put in two different countertops, quartz and maple. Around the windows we recreate the period look with custom-cut casing and backbanding and add some shelving. On the walls we put clean, white subway tile.
