Parsnips have a very long growing season. Radishes grow quickly in the garden, so they are perfect compliments to each other. Joe begins the show by planting parsnips directly in the garden. He makes 18-inch deep, cone-shape holes. He fills these holes with equal parts soil and compost, and plants three parsnip seeds two inches deep. Next, he plants the radish seedlings with the parsnips. The radishes provide a marker for the parsnips since parsnips take up to two weeks to germinate. He shows how the radish seedlings will be ready to harvest, just when the parsnips are leafing out. He explains that the weaker parsnip seedlings are removed, leaving the strongest to develop. He shows how to care for the parsnips during their long growing season, protect them from early frost and harvest them.
