In this episode of DIY's Be Your Own Contractor: Vacation Homes viewers meet Jeff and Lois Shelden. Jeff is an architect and acted as his own contractor on the construction of his mountain retreat in Montana's Judith Mountains. Jeff tells why he wanted to be his own contractor when he built his unique cabin designed to replicate a forest-ranger lookout tower. He also talks about the recycled materials he used in the construction and how he went about acquiring them. Jeff shares some of the experiences he went through getting his excavation, foundation, roofing and windows done. He also describes some of the work he did on the house himself. Finally, like all of the do-it-yourselfers featured in this series, Jeff and Lois provide some firsthand advice about what you can expect when acting as your own contractor and building a vacation home.
