On this episode of
Be Your Own Contractor: Vacation Homes you'll meet the Helgoth Family. Don and Connie (the parents) and four of their seven children built their log cabin in the mountains of Southern Colorado. They not only acted as their own contractors, but they also did most of the work themselves. The family explains why they chose to build a log home and the sacrifices they made to build the house two and a half hours away from their main residences, and the bond it formed for this already close family. You'll hear about the area they built and the challenges they faced building on a remote site, such as getting utilities. You'll also find out about building their foundation with insulated concrete forms and the challenges they faced doing that job.
