    Steps:

    1. Wash and dry mint tin. Spray outdoors with black primer paint.

    2. When primer is dry, spray with chalkboard paint (figure A). Spray some of the spray paint into the cap or a paper cup and use a craft paintbrush to paint the insides of the lid and bottom. Don't worry about getting paint on the inside bottom of the tin.

    3. When dry, use a white paint pen to draw a tic-tac-toe board on top of the tin. Then outline the top of the tin with the red pen. Add any other decorations you would like (figure B).

    4. Cut a piece of cardboard from a cereal box that is 3-1/4" x 3-5/8". Round the corners using a nickel as the corner template. Draw a line across the center of the long width. Draw two more lines that are on both sides of the centerline, 1/2 inch away from the center line (figure C).

    5. Score the three lines with the fabric tracing wheel. Fold the cardboard on the scored lines so that you have a "mountain" in the middle of the piece (figure D).

    6. Cut another piece of cardboard that is 2-1/4" x 3-5/8". Draw a line that is 5/8 inch from the top and 1/2 inch away from each side.

    7. Cut red felt rectangles the same size as the cardboard pieces using the cardboard pieces as your templates (figure E). Glue the felt to the cardboards to the right sides using white glue.

    8. Completely glue the bottom piece with the "mountain" into the tin, felt side out (figure F).

    9. Cut a slash on the line that you made in the top cardboard and through the felt to hold a little note pad (figure G).

    10. Glue the top cardboard piece, felt side out, only around the edges so that a notepad back can easily slip in.

    11. Make a little notepad by stapling a 2-1/4" x 1-3/4" piece of cardboard to a piece of computer paper folded in half twice (figure H) and thirds once (figure I).

    12. Cut away the extra computer paper using the cardboard as the template (figure J).

    13. Shorten the cardboard backing by about 3/4 inch so that it easily fits in the slit in the top of the lid (figure K).

    14. Use pinking shears to cut a piece of black felt the same size as the top red felt that can be used for a chalkboard eraser. Roll up that eraser piece and put in one side of the divided bottom with a small pencil. Put two pieces of chalk in the other side (figure L). Keep in the car for the kids!
