Ilene Adelman is a landscape designer by trade and an amateur photographer and assemblage artist by desire. She combines the two by using materials found on the job to incorporate into her art. She has always taken found larger objects and used them as art, but about five years ago she realized she could combine smaller pieces to create art of her own. As she works in landscaping, she picks up materials that others are getting rid of, like rusty nails, wire mesh, screen from windows or doors, wood or sections of sheet metal. She brings them back to her studio to be used in an assemblage later. She also takes pictures of interesting textures she comes across, like discolored concrete or water stains. These pictures are copied and blown up into several sizes and set aside for future use. When Adelman is ready to create an assemblage, she starts by choosing the main piece that will serve as a background for her art assemblage. The background piece is then primed and altered to create interest. She then sorts through her abundance of found objects and photo collections, picking and choosing the right pieces for her art. She will then alter the photos by tearing, painting or wrinkling them to create even more interest. Once she has all her pieces, she begins to play with the shapes, colors, designs and textures, moving them around and layering them until she feels she has achieved the look she wants. Once the design is complete, all the elements are then layered; using a variety of techniques, she adheres all the pieces of the assemblage to the main background piece. When finished, she has a dimensional, intriguing blend of images, textures and found artifacts that, when combined, create a true work of art.
