Steps:1. To make the polymer clay base: Cut a 6" x 8" piece of cardboard. Wrap smaller ends together into a cone, overlapping slightly so that it is 6 inches around one end and 7 inches around the other. Flatten slightly to form an oval (figure A). Tape to secure.
2. Roll conditioned polymer (can be scrap polymer or any color since it will be covered) in the thickest pasta maker setting (figure B). Cover the cone to form the cup of the holder approximately 5 inches high. Trim and smooth together where the clay meets.
3. Cut a 3" x 3" square from a double-layer of polymer (each run through on the thickest setting).
4. Place on paper on pan and bake per the manufacturer's guidelines. When cool, remove the cup from the cardboard form and trim top and bottom with a craft knife to sit flat on the base and to be even across the top.
5. To prepare the leather: Cut two pieces of leather that are 5" x 5" and 10" x 8". Paint the smooth side of each with diluted Lumiere metallic acrylic paint and let dry completely (figure C).
6. Wrap larger piece of leather around cardboard to identify where the front image should be placed. Trim leather to overlap in the back of the cup by 1/2 inch along the top edge of the cup and approximately 1 inch longer on the bottom. Lay leather flat on protected (newspaper-covered) surface.
7. To create and add decals: Create or find images for the holder. Try black and white photos of glasses, like ours, or words like, "Has anyone seen my glasses?!" We used lots of small images of glasses for the base of the holder and one large image on the cup (figure D).
8. Copy the image onto the shiny side of Lazertran regular decal paper on a photocopier. Cut out decals and soak in water for 1 to 2 minutes. Paper will roll up and become less opaque. Pat with paper towel to remove excess water.
9. Brush the area of the leather where the decal is to be placed with turpentine. Slide the decal off the backing paper onto the leather (figure E). Dab turpentine lightly on top of the decal. Let sit overnight. Turpentine will dissolve decal and image will soak into leather. Paint with Leather Sheen or varnish to protect the decal and leather. Let dry.
10. To build the eyeglass holder: Paint contact cement onto the outside of the baked polymer cup and one side of the polymer base. Paint the back (suede side) of both pieces of the leather with contact cement. After 20 to 30 minutes, position the leather on the cup (figure F).
11. With cement sides together, place the polymer base on leather square. Cement the edges and back of the base. Fold leather around to back, pinching and trimming corners. Cut a 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" piece of leather and cement the smooth side of it to cover the bottom of the base, suede side out.
12. Paint contact cement on the base in the center and along the edge and overlapping leather of the cup. After 20 to 30 minutes, place the cup on the base, pressing firmly to adhere.
13. Cut a piece of leather to fit inside the cup (the size of the outside of the cup). Wrap around the cup with the suede side of the leather next to the decal. Overlap in the back of the cup. With an 8-inch piece of wire, wrap around the cup approximately 1/2 inch below the top rim. Twist wire to secure (figure G).
14. Paint the inside of the cup and the smooth side of the leather with contact cement. Flip the leather over the wire and into the center of the cup (figure H). (You may need to adjust the leather where it overlaps under the wire to make it fit smoothly inside the cup.) Press onto the polymer base to secure.
15. Cut leather piece to fit inside the base of the cup and glue inside with cement to give the holder a finished appearance.
