*or two 7" x 7" heavy cardboard pieces, one with a 3" x 3" center opening, plus 14 black pages, 4 little black cardboard strips as spacers; all having holes on one side for binding
Steps:1. Start with one of the "Eight Corners" pewter stickers. To color it, squeeze some drops of the three colors of Ancient Page re-inkers on a palette.
2. Using a thin brush, paint only one or two corners at a time: neptune for the background, sage for the leaves, and cobalt for the flowers (figure A). Be careful not to put too much ink on your brush. Put embossing powder on the colored parts and continue the painting until the whole image is colored. It is not necessary to paint the parts between the corners.
3. When all corners are painted and powdered, put it onto a piece of board. Because the sticker is made out of metal, you should not touch it while heating. Use a heat tool to activate the embossing powder (figure B). Some of the painting may not be embossed enough. If so, let cool and then repeat the embossing step by covering the whole pewter with clear embossing ink (by rubbing off the embossing pad), coating it again with embossing powder and re-heating.
4. Color two stickers in this manner and set them both aside.
5. To prepare the album, start with the square piece of cardboard that has a square hole in the front (figure C). Using the glue stick, add glue on one side of this cardboard. Center it on one of the 8-1/2" x 8-1/2" blue papers and press down to adhere. Cut the paper at 45-degree angles at the corners of the paper (leaving about 1/8 inch for a nicer fold). Using the glue stick, add glue to the edges of the paper and adhere the edges to the back of the cardboard (figure D).
6. Add glue to the back side of the paper in the center of the square opening. Using a craft knife, cut an "X" in the paper in the square opening. Fold back the resulting triangular paper flaps and adhere them to the back of the cardboard (figure E).
7. To make a backdrop for the colored stickers, layer the piece of Maruyama mesh paper and the small piece of blue paper to the inside of the front cover so that it shows through the square hole (figure F). Glue them with double-sided tape. Finish the back of the cover by gluing one piece of the 6-5/8" x 6-1/2" other blue paper slightly offset, so that space where the binding holes will fall will not be covered (figure G).
8. "Repunch" the pre-drilled holes with a needle or tack.
9. To finish decorating the front cover, use scissors to cut out the center square of one of the painted self-adhesive pewter stickers and simply adhere it to the center of the cover, on top of the Maruyama paper, by peeling off the protective backing (figure H). Keep the leftover corners for a future project.
10. The second pewter is cut with scissors along the lines in the design so that you obtain eight triangles and some thin strips of pewter. The triangles are placed over the borders of the square hole to form a geometric pattern with an octagonal shape in the center (figure I).
11. Some of the pewter strips are used as accents on the cover (figure J).
12. Prepare the back cover by covering with paper, using the same steps as for the front cover, except there is no hole.
13. To assemble the album, layer the front cover, all pages with the spacers displayed randomly in between the sheets, and the back cover. Ribbon and needle are used to bind the book (figure K). Make sure the spacers are all stacked with the rest when you bind it, as they easily move while working on it.
14. Bind the book with ribbon and leave two long "tails" extending from the bottom of the book. One long tail can be used as a bookmark. Both tails of ribbon can be decorated with beads, and extra strips of pewter can be wrapped around the beads as a decorative accent.
Tips:
Using a very liquid permanent ink such as Ancient Page will preserve the shiny look of the pewter. A thicker pigment ink, like the Clearsnap Crafter's ink pads or reinkers, will be also permanent, if heated with a heat tool, but will have a matte finish. If using a very thin coat of permanent ink (such as Ancient Page), you may be able to skip the embossing step.
Pewter Beads: Some of the Magenta self-adhesive pewters have interesting patterns that can be transformed easily into pewter beads. For example, a square pewter sticker can be made into a bead by peeling off half of the backing, then rolling it (starting with the part with the backing) around a skewer. When you get to the end, the adhesive will secure the roll of the bead. Easy--an amazing bead in few seconds! Be careful because some of the pewter stickers have a "patina" that can stain light clothes. Wipe them off before using for jewelry.
