    Steps:

    1. Remove all hardware from the file cabinet and lightly sand the entire surface (figure A).

    2. Wash down the surface of the cabinet with vinegar to eliminate all oils from the surface.

    3. Apply two coats of primer to surface, allowing each coat to thoroughly dry.

    4. Apply the base coat color of choice. We used reindeer moss green for the base, one drawer in camel and the other drawer in French vanilla (figure B).

    5. Using a quilter’s ruler, measure and mark off the section for the outside border on the sides, top and drawer fronts (figure C).

    6. Apply tape on the inside of marked off areas. Miter corners as needed (figure D).

    7. Stencil all outside border areas with the animal print (figure E).

    8. After stenciling is completed, remove all tape and reposition the tape line to the outside edge of the marked off areas (figure F). You will be taping over the stenciled areas.

    9. You will next apply the crackle sizing to the inside panels on the sides, top and drawer fronts. Allow the sizing medium to set up for approximately one or two hours; it needs to be a dry tack (figure G).

    10. When the sizing is set, apply the Grossezze (plaster crackle) over the sized areas. You can stipple into the crackle with cheesecloth or plastic bag (figure H).

    11. After crackle has dried, you will create a glaze using the glazing medium and stain. Apply the glaze mixture over the crackled areas and pounce with the cheesecloth to eliminate any brush strokes (figure I).

    12. After everything has dried, remove all tape. Attach the decorative hardware for the drawer handles and attach the wooden ball knobs using the E-6000 adhesive (figure J).

Tips: Be patient with metal. Allow each coat of primer to thoroughly dry before you apply the next. Try different patterns and color combinations to create something that goes with your home.
