Materials: old window brush basin or water container tracing paper paper towels eraser Masterson Sta-Wet palette pencil 1/2-inch masking tape alcohol or glass cleaner old toothbrush Loew-Cornell brushes - series #7300 flat brushes in sizes #4 and #8 - series #7350 liner brush in size #1 Plaid large and small sponge daubers Plaid Folk Art Sparkles - bright red - real green - hologram Plaid Folk Art paints - licorice - wicker white - blue ribbon - leaf green Folk Art artist pigments - napthol crimson - pure orange - raw sienna - yellow ochre and ice blue dark Steps: 1. Clean the glass with the alcohol or glass cleaner. 2. Transfer the snowman pattern to tracing paper. 3. Tape the pattern tracing to the back side of the glass so it shows through (figure A). 4. Outline the details of the pattern--in this case the snowman eyes, the lower side of the nose, mouth, the broom head, the scarf, and the the snowman stomach area with a thin line of licorice-colored paint using the liner brush (figure B). Let dry. 5. Paint the hat band with the red sparkle using the #4 brush. Let dry. 6. Paint the gloves with the green sparkle using the #4 brush. Let dry. 7. Place a small whicker white-colored dot in the snowman eyes using the liner brush.
8. Use the toothbrush and thinned wicker white to lightly fleck falling snow onto the glass. Let dry. 9. Paint the hat band with napthol crimson using the #4 brush. Let dry. 10. Paint the snowman eyes with the liner brush and licorice-colored paint. Let dry. 11. Paint the snowman nose with pure orange, using the liner brush. Let dry. 12. Paint the broom head with yellow ochre, using the #4 or the #8 brush. Let dry. 13. Apply the red sparkle to the scarf using the #4 or the #8 brush (figure C). Let dry. 14. Dip the small dauber in licorice-colored paint, daub it on the palette a few times and then daub on the snowman buttons. Let dry. 15. Paint the gloves with the leaf green, using the #4 brush (figure D). Let dry.
16. Use the #8 brush and licorice-colored paint to paint the hat (figure E). Two coats may be required. Let dry. 17. Paint the broom handle with raw sienna-colored paint using the liner brush. Let dry. 18. Paint the scarf with napthol crimson, using the #4 or the #8 brush. Let dry. 19. Carefully apply the hologram sparkles to the body and face of the snowman (figure F). Let dry. 20. Paint snow at the base of the snowman with the wicker white-colored paint plus a touch of ice blue dark-colored paint using the #8 brush. Let dry.
21. Using the large dauber, pick up a little ice blue dark-colored paint on one side, and wicker white-colored paint on the other side. Pat on the palette. Begin daubing (figure G) in the shadow area on the left side of the body, the head and the arms.
22. While wet, dip the dauber into wicker white-colored paint, pat on the palette and begin daubing in the body and head of the snowman to cover the previously-dried layers of paint. Let dry. Tips: - Keep in the lines when applying the paint to the various parts of the snowman.
- Always make sure each layer of paint is dry before applying more paint.
- Use a damp towel or cotton swab to clean up any paint run or smear.
