Carol provides the step-by-step for putting together miniature boxes from old photographs, used greeting cards, and other materials. These adorable boxes are great for containing that special gift, to use as decorations, or to hang as ornaments on the Christmas tree.
Steps For Boxes From Greeting Cards:
These cardboard boxes can be any size, depending on the size of the cards that are used. Photographs work well, too. You'll need an craft knife also. - Open up the card and cut straight down the fold line so that the card is in two pieces.
- On what was the back side of the card, cut off approximately 1/8-inch on one side and one end. This sheet will become the bottom of the box, and cutting it will allow the bottom to be smaller than the top.
- Turn the front part of the card over so that it is face down. With a pencil, draw four lines, each line parallel to the edge and 1-inch in from each side. An easy way to do this without measuring each time is to cut a 1-inch cardboard strip and use that as a guide against the edges of the card.
- These pencil lines will become the fold lines. For a sharp crease, score each line (i.e., along line, lightly touch blade so that it doesn't go all the way through) and then fold each flap up, wrong sides together.
- Unfold all 4 sides and mark each "flap" again, this time at approximately 1/2-inch from the edge.
- Score the new lines and fold again, this time matching up the edge of the card with the original fold lines.
- Unfold and make 2 cuts: On each end, cut on each fold line up to the perpendicular fold line ? approximately 1-inch.
- Fold up sides and fold over so that each side has a "double" thickness.
- The cuts you made in Step 7 will create "tabs" on two opposite sides of the lid that will make those sides longer than the box itself. To finish the lid, simply bend the tabs toward the box and tuck them into the folded part of their adjacent sides.
- Repeat Steps 3 through 9 for the bottom of the box, and fit lid and bottom together.
