Projects by Michele Gerbrandt. Arrange photos in basic layout to see how they fit on the page. Decide which photos will use the different cropping techniques below:
Partial Frames TechniqueMaterials: photos circle template cutting mat white photo pencil acid-free adhesive background paper scissors (or craft knife & metal ruler) paper trimmer (optional) Steps: 1. Using a circle template, trace a circle with a white photo pencil onto one photo. Crop a second photo into a rectangular shape using a paper trimmer or ruler and craft knife on a mat. 2. Using the next larger circle on the circle template, trace the shape onto a rectangular photo in the area that will form the partial frame. Cut out the partial circle on the rectangular photo. 3. Mount the circle photo on the background page, and then align and adhere the partial cropped photo next to it (figure A).

Rectangular Frames (with ruler)Materials: photos craft knife metal ruler cutting mat clear grid ruler white photo pencil acid-free adhesive removable tape background paper Steps: 1. Tape a 4" x 6" photo to mat with removable tape to hold photo in position. 2. Using a ruler and white photo pencil, draw a 3" x 5" rectangle shape onto the center of the photo to create a crop mark line. 3. Using the grid ruler, measure a 1/4-inch rectangular shape around the outside of the first crop mark line. Draw this shape onto the photo to create an outer crop mark line (figure B). 4. Using a craft knife and metal ruler, trim out the outer crop mark line first, then the inner crop mark line (figure C). 5. Mount the center image onto the background page, placing the outer frame around the image with an equal distance around all the edges (figure D).

Circular Frames (with nested template)Materials: photos nest circle template foam mat swivel knife white photo pencil acid-free adhesive background paper removable tape Steps: 1. Tape photo onto foam mat with removable tape to hold photo in position while cutting. 2. Place the template over the photo. Select the size that will crop your photo best. Place the swivel knife in the channel of the template for the size you've selected and push down firmly until you hear the knife pierce the photo. 3. Holding the knife vertically, pull the blade downward with consistent pressure, allowing the blade to steer itself through the template channel (figure E). 4. Repeat the process with the next larger channel and then again with the third largest channel. 5. Lift the template from the photos, and you will have a photo cut in three sections (figure F). 6. Remove the middle section to leave the outside "ring" around your photo (figure G).

Oval Cropped Frames (figure H)Materials: 8 photos two 8-1/2" x 11" white background pages photo pencil grid ruler craft knife metal ruler cutting mat temporary adhesive oval graduated/nesting template foam mat swivel knife acid-free adhesive Steps: 1. Arrange six background photos on one sheet of 8-1/2" x 11" white background paper. Using the grid ruler and photo pencil, mark photos to crop with 1/8-inch space between them (figure I). 2. Remove photos from the background and trim with a craft knife and metal ruler. Once trimmed, rearrange and adhere photos with temporary adhesive to the white background. These photos need to be securely in place in order to make the oval inset cuts (figure J). 3. Lay the two remaining photos to be framed on top of the photo arrangement. Using the oval graduated template, determine the oval size to crop the top photos. Remove photos and crop into ovals with swivel knife and foam mat. 4. Lay oval cropped photos for placement back onto the photo arrangement. Using the next size oval (1/4-inch larger), trim oval frames from the background (figure K). This will cut a complete oval out of the background photo arrangement and paper (figure L). 5. Remove all the photos from the cut white background and mount them with permanent adhesive to the second sheet of white background paper (figure M).
