Art Shirer designs kinetic sculptures out of mild steel. Over the last 15 years he has mastered the balance of things. His sculpture relies on physics to achieve its purpose. One would think there was a scientific mind behind them, but instead he relies completely on his instincts to uncover the mysteries of balance and gravity . His creations are designed to draw the viewer in--to take them on a journey. Small motors propel some of his designs, some use the wind, and others rely on the simple pull of a finger. Shirer shares the steps involved in creating these moving sculptures. By brazing solid bar stock, rings and rods together, he constructs a kinetic sculpture.
