Guest Michelle Newman painted the background of this curtain with diluted Dye-Na-Flow fabric paint then painted additional design elements over that.

Newman created a striped background here using a wide, stiff paintbrush, broad strokes and diluted Dye-Na-Flow fabric paint. The paint is diluted 50:50 with water.

For added design, Newman fashioned these "flying saucer/doughnut" shapes using a 1/2-inch wide brush and metallic paint.

Newman finished the painted drapes by using fusible webbing to add tissue lame' polka dots randomly around the painted designs.

Project designed and demonstrated by Michelle Newman.

    Materials:

    Plaid
    - FolkArt Pure Gold #660 metallic paint
    - spouncer
    - glaze roller #53476
    Winsor & Newton 995 series 1/2" and 1/4" paintbrushes
    leaf stamp
    4' x 8' roll of 3" or 4" thick Nu Foam
    T-pins
    12 brass leaf charms
    needle and thread
    CHF Industries 60" x 84" sage curtain #S57000GSE

    Steps:

    1. Place a 4' x 8' roll of Nu-Foam on top of work table.

    2. Secure curtain to Nu-Foam using T-pins (figure A).

    3. Enlarge a meandering vine pattern using a copy machine to desired scale.

    4. Trace or transfer the design lightly onto the curtain.

    5. To make vines, begin painting two wavy vertical lines with the 1/2-inch paintbrush , continuing this pattern all across the curtain, leaving enough space for a large leaf (figure B).

    6. Add big, dramatic leaves staggered along the vine (figure C).

    7. If desired, add veins to leaves using the 1/4-inch brush (figure D).

    8. Using spouncer, print random polka dots going up the vine.

    9. To create a border, print leaves then paint in any serrated edges. Leave enough space between leaves for polka dot accents (figure E).

    10. Let dry thoroughly overnight.

    11. Heat set by ironing on reverse side for 10 minutes or place in a commercial clothes dryer for 30 minutes.

    12. Embellish the top of the curtain with leaf charms (figure F).

Tip - This technique will work on cotton, poly-cotton, silk, nylon, rayon or linen fabric.
