    Figure E

    Project designed by B. Antonelli.

    Materials:

    B. Antonelli gourd necklace kit
      - clean mini gourd
      - three-foot length of two-ply waxed linen thread
      - tapestry needle
      - beads for embellishment
      - awl
      - nail glue
    acrylic paint - optional
    stain - optional
    dye-based ink -optional
    wood burning tool - optional

    Steps:

    Cleaning and cutting the gourd

    1. Cut through the neck of the gourd in a level manner using a band saw, hacksaw or similar sharp, small-toothed saw.

    2. Scoop out the inside of the gourd and seeds with a small spoon or screwdriver, being careful not to puncture through the wall of the gourd.

    3. Sand the top edge of the gourd.

    Decorating the gourd

    1. Create a snug band around the neck of the gourd with two or three wraps of the two-ply waxed linen thread (figure A).

    2. Place seven or eight evenly-spaced hitches around the band. To make each hitch, run the needle down (top to bottom) under the band and over the loop created. Pull snug. Repeat.

    3. Continue the hitches, pushing the needle through the belly of the next loop and pulling taut.

    4. Establish the second course with the same technique. Push the needle down under the belly of the loop in the starter course and pull it over its own loop tautly. The hitches will begin to form diagonal lines across the gourd (figure B).

    5. Continue the hitches, making courses until the loops meet on the underside of the gourd (figure C). Tie off the thread, leaving at least three inches dangling to add embellishments (beads, charms, etc.). Cut varied lengths of waxed linen and tie them to the bottom center of the gourd, stringing beads and charms on the threads as desired (figure D).

    6. To create a neck strap, tie an appropriate length of doubled waxed linen to each side of the band. String and/or knot the beads evenly on each side of the strap if desired (figure E).
