    Figure E

    Project designed by Barbara DiClemente.

    Materials:

    glass plate
    burnt sienna color acrylic paint
    black acrylic paint
    white acrylic paint
    gold metallic paint
    gloss varnish
    precious metal rub-ons
    sea sponge
    craft stick
    chip brush

    Steps:

    1. Clean the back side of the plate with glass cleaner. Let dry.

    2. Lightly load burnt sienna color paint onto a chip brush. Brush the paint onto a sea sponge and lightly dab it onto the plate. Cover about 90 percent of the plate (figure A). Let dry.

    3. Apply black paint to the sponge in the same manner. While the black paint is still wet, apply white paint with the sponge. Be sure not to blend the colors too much at this point, so that the plate has sections of white, black and a slight amount of gray. Let dry. Paint a coat of gold paint over the entire back of the plate (figure B). Let dry.

    4. Apply one coat of gloss varnish to the sponge painted plate. Let dry (figure C).

    5. Turn the dry plate over and clean the top part of the plate with window glass cleaner. Let dry.

    6. Cut the desired pattern of the rub-on from the sheet. Make sure the tissue backing is on the transfer sheet when cutting out the design.

    7. Place the design on the plate, removing the tissue backing. While holding down the corner of the transfer sheet, rub the corner of the design with a craft stick. When the corner is secured, gently pull up the transfer sheet toward the craft stick while you rubbing the design onto a finger (figure D). The pressure of the craft stick into the area that the finger is lifting will help to apply the design onto the plate in an easy manner.

    8. Rub the tissue backing gently over the design. This helps to burnish and polish the design. Continue applying the rub-ons until the desired effect is achieved.

    9. Let the plate cure for 48 hours (figure E).

    Tips:

    • Don't rush when applying the rub-on design. Move the craft stick in an even pressure and an exact movement. Be aware of the areas already rubbed.
    • If a mistake is made, remove the rub-on with acetone (nail polish remover).
