Projects designed and demonstrated by Helen Gibb. Ornament Materials: three-inch foam ball three yards of one-inch-wide bias cut silk ribbon - Olde Christmas 1-1/2 yards of 1-1/2-inch-wide bias cut silk ribbon - Garnet 12 inches of 1/4-inch bias silk cording, Garnet nine inches of 22-gauge thread-covered wire two-inch tassel three pieces of three-inch lengths mini artificial pine bough spray adhesive tacky glue and hot glue thread and needle scissors ruler Helen's book - Heirloom Ribbonwork Steps: - Make three folded roses using 15 inches each of the Garnet silk ribbon. Follow instructions found in Heirloom Ribbonwork (figure A).
- Insert the wire through the foam ball. Secure the wire with a small "loop/knot" at the bottom end.
- Spray the foam ball using spray adhesive.
- Place five-inch strips of Olde Christmas bias silk ribbon over the ball so it is completely covered. Trim ends and dab with tacky glue to secure.
- Gather a nine-inch length of Olde Christmas silk ribbon, pull tightly to form a circle of ribbon. Place around the base of the ball so all raw edges of ribbon strips are covered (figure B).
- Hot glue a tassel to the base of the ball (figure C).
- Make a loop in the wire at the top of the ball. Insert the Garnet cording through this loop, securing at the ends of the cording. This is the hanger for the ornament.
- Arrange and glue three Garnet folded roses around the top.
- Glue the three sprigs of artificial greenery between the roses (figure D).
Optional idea: A porcelain half doll (with a hole at the top of her head) can be added to the top of the ball. Substitute a 12-inch piece of wire for the nine-inch wire used above. - Each magnolia has three small petals (cut the 1-1/2-inch-wide cream ribbon into five-inch pieces) surrounding the pod center and five large outer petals (cut the two-inch-wide cream ribbon into six-inch pieces). Stitch the arched pattern (figure I).
- Glue or stitch the three smaller petals around the pod, and then glue the five larger petals under the other petals.
- Cover the raw edges of the petals with floral tape and continue to tape down the wire stem.
- Arrange the magnolias with several sprigs of pine bough. Wire together and cover the wire with a large bow.
