The Carol Duvall Show cameras travel to the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta to focus on the painted glass designs of artist Aziz Diagne. Diagne brought his glass painting technique with him from Africa, where the art of painting on glass is fairly common. "I (was) surrounded by local artists painting on glass," he says. "By seeing it everyday, it was not difficult." However, his work is quite unusual in the United States. Since leaving Africa, Diagne says he hasn't met more than five other glass painters. Diagne uses double-tempered glass as a palate for his designs because it is the strongest glass available. He uses various kinds of paint such as acrylic and varnish until he achieves his desired look for a piece. He first sketches the pieces and adds details with black paint. He then highlights the painting with color. He enjoys impromptu paintings the most. "I just draw freely. I don't have to have a plan," she says, "just sit there, have the feeling and just paint." The color is layered with the fine detail designed first. All other aspects of the painting is built upon that detail until the background is painted as the last layer of the design. The final layer of paint is used to close in the design, filling in and shading all of the previous layers. Diagne is constantly thinking of new ideas for his paintings and hopes he will someday be able to put those ideas into reality. "I don't think I can live long enough to finish what I already have planned to paint," he says.
