    Project designed by Barbara McGuire.

    Materials:

    FIMO soft polymer clay:
    - transparent red (#204)
    - transparent yellow (#104)
    - lavender (#62)
    acrylic brayer or pasta machine
X-Acto craft knife or NuBlade Kato craft knife
one sheet Magic Leaf - gold
    ruler
    T-square
tracing paper or plastic needlework canvas
    pencil
    scissors
    card stock
    Limited Edition African Stamps:
    - #1853D
    - #1862D
400-grit wet sandpaper or manicure sanding block
    mulberry paper or heavy paper
Crafter's Pick Ultimate Tacky glue or Sobo glue
bone folder or the back of a spoon
Liquitex student acrylic paint - burnt sienna
    FIMO gloss or matte varnish
bone button (or make one out of clay)
    thin black leather cording

    Steps:

    1. Cut a 2-1/4-inch square template from tracing paper or canvas. Use this as a guide to cut stamped covers and to mark the measurements for the book pages.

    2. Combine the colors and condition the clay by hand-kneading it or running it through a pasta machine until pliable.

    3. Roll the clay into two flat sheets, each about three inches square and 1/8 inch thick.

    4. Cut gold leaf with scissors and place it onto the two clay sheets. Smooth with fingers to adhere the leaf to the clay.

    5. Press a stamp of choice into the middle of each sheet of clay (figure A). Position the tracing template, centering tracing paper over the stamped impression. Trim the clay with a sharp blade (figure B), creating two square panels for book covers (figure C).

    6. Bake the sheets at 265 degrees on a piece of card stock paper for 20 minutes. Let cool. To keep the baked pieces flat, cover them with clean, non-printed paper and stack a few books on top to hold down the panels as they cool.

    7. Cut a strip of mulberry paper 2-1/4" x 18". Using the tracing template again, accordion fold the strip into eight sections, alternating the direction of the folds (figure D).

    8. Dampen sandpaper and rub it over the gold leaf, scraping the leaf away where the surface is flushed with the paper and leaving an imprint of the stamp (figure E).

    9. Lightly coat the front and back of the book cover with a thin layer of burnt sienna acrylic paint. Varnish the panels to protect the gold leaf (figure F). Let dry.

    10. Glue the end folds of the paper to the panels of the book with Crafter's Pick Ultimate tacky glue. Rub the paper with the bone folder to secure the glue.

    11. Drill two holes in both the front and back covers of the book, but not through the papers. Use a short piece of leather to loosely thread a button and knot on the inside of the cover front. Attach a button to the right and left side of the front book cover.

    12. Use a short piece of leather to make a loop. Thread the loop through the two holes on the back cover panel and knot on the inside to secure the loop (figure G).
