    Materials:

Note: This doll can be made from a variety of materials. Below is a suggested list.

    one, 3" x 5" wooden plaque
    one 1/2-inch square wooden bead
    one bamboo skewer
    3" x 5" gift box lid
5-1/2" x 8-1/2" sheet of black card stock
various images of a person's head, arms and legs, which may be drawn, photocopied or stamped from rubber stamps
various bits of ephemera, collage materials or other small objects
    flat black spray paint
    foam mounting squares
    glue stick
    white glue
    other paints if desired
    felt-tipped, black pen

    Steps:

    1. Paint the wooden plaque, the skewer, all sides of box top and the wooden bead with flat black spray paint. Allow to dry for several hours and re-paint as necessary. The wooden plaque will serve as the "base," the skewer as the "support," and the gift box lid as the "torso." Other colors of paint can be used as desired for any portion of the doll.

    2. Drill holes in the base to accept the support rod (figure A). Remove the pieces and retouch the base with a bit of paint or black marker as needed. Position the support rod toward one edge to allow space on the base for additional embellishment.

    3. Select a head, arms and legs from clip art books, rubber-stamped images, magazine pages, old photos or illustrations (figure B). The images may be photocopied and their size adjusted on a copy machine to desired dimensions. Trim to size, leaving a small edge.

    4. Using a glue stick, mount the selected limbs onto black card stock (figure C). Once dry, carefully cut out the pieces and set aside. Color and extra embellishments to the limbs if desired (figure D), allowing portions of the photocopy to show through a little. Cut out the photocopied body limbs and apply cold mount laminate over the completed body parts to give it a more finished appearance (figure E).

    5. Select appropriate images and materials to complete the collage construction (figure F). Add these images to the inside of the box lid, a kind of "shadow box." This area should display the main focus and theme, tell a story or express imagination (figure G).

    6. Position the cutout head, arms and legs onto the torso with foam mounting tape (figure H) or punch holes in the torso and attach the head, arms and legs with brads.

    7. Glue a wooden bead on the rear of the torso, positioned just above or at the center, and let dry. Place one end of the support through the hole, securing it with glue. Let dry.

    8. Holding the doll above the base, trim the protruding support end as desired and glue it into the previously-drilled hole. Rotate and adjust the doll as needed. Let dry.
