    Materials:

Wire Art 24-gauge, poly-coated wire - Wire Art, Inc. / Duncan
    glass beads
The Amazing Gizmo Wire Coiling Tool
    ColourCraft 20-, 26- and 28-gauge enamel-coated wire
    Fiskars paper crimper
1/8-inch dowel, craft stick, mini craft stick, toothpick
scissors, wire cutters or nail clippers

    Making Coils:

    1. Make several sizes of coils to wrap around the glass stem or cup. Add beads to the coils during the coiling process. To make straight coils, follow the directions to use the wire coiling tool. If working without a coiling tool, wrap the wire evenly onto a 1/8-inch dowel. If the coil looks loose, scrunch the wire together, then slide it off of the dowel. To make spiral coils, follow the instructions to use the wire coiling tool or wrap the wire around a craft stick. Twist both ends of the coil in opposite directions. To make double-wrapped coils, follow the instructions on the coiling tool or wrap the wire onto a toothpick or thin nail. Take it off of the nail or toothpick and wrap it around again. To make a crimped coil, use a paper crimper to crimp the wire (figure A) before using the coiling tool (figure B) or wrap the wire onto a dowel or pop stick. Use two colors of wire for a more dramatic look (figure C). Save some crimped wire that is uncoiled to mix into the wrapping.

    2. Wrap a two-foot piece of base wire onto the stem of a wineglass or onto the handle of a cup. Thread the wire coils made in step 1 onto the base wire (figure D). Punch holes into the upper edges of the paper cup to thread wire through so that a "skirt" of beads or coils can hang around the lip. Leave one side of the cup without holes so that the cup will not leak when drinking from it.

    Tips:

    • When working with pliers, wrap them with masking tape to avoid damaging the wire.
    • Experiment by using a variety of household items to wrap coils around.
    • While working, place the project pieces out on a towel so that beads and coils won't roll around.
