    Materials:

    aida cloth - one 14" x 14" piece and one 7" x 7" piece
    four African trade beads
    four Cowrie shells
    seed beads - black, red, light blue, brown, white, gold striped, medium blue, red-white-and-blue striped, black-and-yellow striped
    strand of African Christmas beads
    two pieces of 5" x 5" cardboard
    #10 English beading needles
    B-weight Nymo thread
    5" x 5" piece of cotton batting
    white glue
    wooden frame
    stapler

    Steps:

    1. Draw the shape and design for a 5" x 5" frame on a piece of graph paper (figure A). Trace the design onto the aida cloth (figure B). Staple the edges of the cloth to a wooden frame to secure it while sewing.

    2. Sew the Cowrie shells into the corners of the frame. Sew the African trade beads onto the frame as desired (figure C).

    3. Using a satin stitch, sew the seed beads to the pattern to cover all remaining spaces (figures D and E). Make sure the threads on the back of the frame do not run across the center square of the frame. Remove the cloth from the wooden frame.

    4. Cut the center square from the frame (figure F). Embellish the edges of the opening with beads.

    5. Place cotton batting around the center hole on the back of the frame (figure G). Cut a square hole to match the frame's center hole (figure H) and glue the cardboard on top of the batting.

    6. Fold the edges of the aida cloth back and secure them to the back of the frame.

    7. Cover the remaining piece of cardboard with the 7" x 7" piece of plain aida cloth. Fold the edges back and secure them to the back of the cardboard. Stitch this covered cardboard piece to the back of the frame (figure I).
