Project designed by Ellie Schneider-Joos. Materials: 6 yards of 3/8-inch black dot satin ribbon 3-5/8 yards of 3/8 -inch red grosgrain ribbon 7/8 yards of 7/8-inch red-and-white checkered ribbon Zippy Zebra ribbon zebras - discontinued, however limited quantities are currently available 3/8 yards muslin fabric for lining 3/8 yards black-and-white gingham checkered fabric 1/4 yards white fabric 6" x 24" piece of 3-inch thick foam rubber 2-5/8-inch white buttons fusible web needle and thread fabric glue tacky glue electric knife sewing machine Steps: - Use electric knife to cut foam into four, six-inch squares. Glue two squares together with tacky glue to form two foam blocks that are each six-inch square. Allow glue to dry thoroughly.
- For each block lining, cut six 6-1/2-inch squares of muslin. Using 1/4-inch seam allowances, machine-stitch the squares together. Leave three sides of the last block open so that the foam block can be inserted into the lining. Place the block in the lining and stitch the opening closed.
- For each block, cut six 6-1/2-inch squares of gingham. Apply fusible web to the back of white fabric. For each block, cut six, four-inch squares of white fabric. Following the manufacturer instructions, fuse a white fabric square to the center of each gingham square. Cut lengths of 3/8-inch black dot ribbon and use fabric glue to glue ribbon around the edge of each white square.
- To make the letter for the alphabet letters, see the illustration (figure A). Note that letters A, B and C are used on one block and X, Y and Z are used on the other block. The letters are made by cutting lengths of 3/8-inch red grosgrain ribbon and gluing them to the center of each white square. The dashed lines in the illustration indicate where ribbons are overlapped.
- Make two each of the remaining squares: zebra, bow and flower. For each zebra square, glue a ribbon zebra to the center of a white square. Make a small two-loop bow with 3/8 of a yard of 3/8-inch grosgrain ribbon and glue to neck of zebra.
- For each ribbon bow square, make a two-loop bow with the 5/8-inch red-and-white checkered ribbon and glue to the center of the white square.
- For each flower square, cut four 24-inch lengths of 3/8-inch red grosgrain ribbon. Form each length into a loop, overlap the ends and sew through the center to form two petals. Continue to add loops to create an eight-loop flower, and glue or sew completed flower to the center of the white square (figure B).
- Each block is made of six squares: three letters, zebra, bow and flower. Using 1/4-inch seam allowance, stitch squares together. Leave three sides of the last square unstitched so that the covered foam block can be inserted. Stitch the opening closed.
