    Figure A

    Project designed by Lesley Carlson.

    Materials:

1" x 2" piece of lumber cut to any desired length
strand(s) of miniature lights approved for outdoor use
    wide staple gun

    Steps:

    1. With the lights unplugged, staple the end of the strand without a plug to a 1" x 2" piece of lumber (figure A). Take care to staple around, not through the wire. Important Note: Piercing the wire insulation (the plastic coating around the wire) creates a fire hazard. If you should pierce the wire strand insulation, discard that strand of lights. Do not use lights that aren't in perfect condition.
    2. Move down the string of lights a foot or so, loop that section, and secure it to the piece of lumber with the staple gun. Continue looping and securing the light strand in this manner. Try making each loop a different length to more closely imitate irregular shaped icicles. Repeat with additional strands of lights if needed to cover the full length of the board. Be sure to leave enough of the cord free at the end of the strand to plug in the cord or to plug into an appropriate outdoor extension cord.
    3. Position the 1" x 2" board in a section of guttering surrounding the roof. Let the loops of lights stream down over the edge of the guttering to simulate icicles. Once the holidays are over, remove the 1" x 2" board and store it with the lights still attached for future use.
