Project demonstrated by Lesley Carlson. Materials:
six relatively straight twigs or sticks - one slightly longer than the other five twine, yarn, raffia or string scissors strand of miniature lights - optional
Steps: - Remove branches from sticks or twigs.
- Cut 10 six- to eight-inch lengths of twine. Twine or raffia create a more natural look then yarn or string.
- Tie two twigs together at one end using a length of twine. Separate the two twigs on the unbound end, forming a V-shape (figure 1).
- Working to form the star shape, tie a third twig at one unbound end of the V-shaped twigs, diagonally intersecting the adjacent twig (figure 2). Repeat with a fourth twig on the opposite unbound end of the original V-shape (figure 3 ).
- Tie a fifth twig to the unbound ends of the third and fourth twigs to complete the five-sided star (figure 4).
- Reinforce each twig intersection with twine (figure 5). Be sure to tie all twine as neatly and securely as possible, forming X-shapes around the intersections with the twine. Use enough twine to help stabilize the star without making the ties too bulky.
- To make a yard stake for the star, tie the longer sixth twig to the middle of the star, starting at the top point and bisecting the shape (figure 6). Reinforce all intersections with twine. If using the star as a decorative door hanging, eliminate this step.
- If desired, wrap a strand of miniature lights around the star to add an extra twinkle of holiday cheer.
