Project designed by Mary O'Neil. Materials:
large pot for dyeing fabric - not for food use wooden spoons for stirring - not for food use iron Deka Series L dye velvet white silk scarves Hot Potatoes stamps spray bottle 100% silk or rayon white velvet
Steps: - Follow directions on package of dye to color silk or rayon velvet. Guest Mary O'Neil strongly recommends using the Deka Series L brand.
- Let the velvet dry completely.
- Lightly mist with water on the wrong side of the fabric.
- Place the rubber stamp on the work surface, rubber side up. Position fabric over stamp with the right side down.
- With a hot iron on cotton setting, iron on top of the velvet covering the stamp. Keep iron flat on the fabric only over the stamp image.
- Move another section of the fabric over the stamp and press. Continue until the entire piece of fabric is embossed.
Tips: - Bent wire or lace can be used for embossing as well as Hot Potatoes brand rubber stamps.
- Dry clean only to care for dyed velvet.
- Try to use an iron with few steam holes to create a design. Inexpensive irons with holes only around the outer image are perfect.
- Hot Potatoes Rubber Stamps owner Mary O'Neil developed this technique for embossing on velvet. Hot Potatoes brand stamps with large, deeply cut solid images and strong adhesive are perfect for this type of embossing. Hot Potatoes guarantees their stamps for this process.
