    Project by Donna Kato.

    Materials:

    Kato Polyclay Black #12311
    Kato Polyclay Clear Medium
    Genesis heat-set white artist oil
    Perfect Pearls pigment powder
    Perfect Medium
    flat brush for Clear Medium
fluffy brush and smaller brush for powder
    small rubber stamps
    Yasutomo Gel Xtreme pens
    heat gun
    skewer or fine knitting needle

    Steps:

    1. Roll a ball of conditioned black Polyclay and push a skewer or knitting needle through to make a bead (figure A).

    2. Using the fluffy brush, brush Perfect Pearls powder onto bead.

    3. Apply Genesis paint with your finger to the small rubber stamp and stamp onto the bead (figure B).

    4. Bake at 275 F degrees for 30 minutes and let cool (figure C).

    5. Using fluffy brush, apply a coat of Kato Polyclay Clear Medium to bead. Set this layer using a heat gun (figure D). Let bead cool. In this case, the fluffy brush is used in order not to spread the Perfect Pearl powder across the surface.

    6. Tap the rubber stamp into Perfect Medium. Using the fluffy brush, dust the surface of the stamp with Perfect Pearl powder and blow off excess. Press stamp to bead (figure E). Seal applied detail by with dabbing Kato Polyclay Clear Medium. Set using a heat gun and allow to cool.

    7. Using a flat brush, apply another layer of Kato Polyclay Clear Medium. Set with heat gun and allow to cool (figure F).

    8. Draw Gel Xtreme details onto bead (figure G). Let dry, then dab Kato Polyclay Clear Medium over details to seal. Set with heat gun. Allow to cool.

    9. Apply one coat of Clear Medium using a flat brush. Set with heat gun. You may apply more coats, setting after each application if desired.

    10. Finish bead by baking at 275 F degrees for 30 minutes. Let bead cool in oven. String and wear!

    Notes:

Polymer clay must be conditioned prior to use. Either knead chunks in hands or fold and roll through pasta machine until soft and pliable.

This technique uses both heat-set materials and nonpermanent inks. The Kato Polyclay Clear Medium sets at 275 F degrees, as does the Genesis Paint. The Perfect Medium and Gel Xtreme pens do not permanently set upon application and must be sealed within Kato Polyclay Clear Medium whenever they are applied. Application method is lightly dabbing over applied details with finger, being careful not to slide finger across which might smear details. The heat gun is used at these times to quickly seal details in rather than risk ruining them. When using Genesis Paint, it isn’t necessary to seal the detail with Kato Polyclay Clear Medium; you simply heat using the heat gun to set. For best results, details should be applied to a cool bead.
