The Shoebox was filled to almost overflowing today with wonderful contributions from our viewers.

First item out of the box was a grand group of photographs from Dr. Ya-Mei Yu, a pediatrician and neonatologist in Irvine, Calif. Somewhere in her busy schedule the doctor must make time to crochet, because she sent in a set of pictures of the totally delightful creatures she has crocheted. There was a basket full of hippos (figure A), a family of pandas (figure B), a charming frog (figure C), a pair of very curly poodles (figure D), and an entire tree full of monkeys! (figure E) Also included was a photo of a perfect little Pooh bear, but because it looked so exactly like the Disney version of Pooh, I could not show it on television. Copyrights, you know! Dr. Yu wrote that she does not work from any patterns, she just makes them up as she goes along!

It was a bit of a success story that Gail Kushner of Tucson, Ariz., wrote us about. Gail sent in a card with a very cute and funny doll pin pinned to it (figure F). Gail wrote that some time ago she had seen a guest on our show make some doll pins that she was quite taken with, so she started making her own versions of what she saw. After making a few changes here and there and expanding on the idea, she ended up with what turned out to be her own line of Wild Women pins that she now sells. Gail also sent along several pages of photos of her variations of the dolls as well as a few pages of other examples of her work, including her glass painting (figures G & H), decorative boxes, and holiday ornaments. A true crafter!

Next was a letter from Ann Pittman of Lucana, N.C., who also paints, but her subject matter is quite different. Ann paints North Carolina lighthouses on almost anything and sent along a couple of examples. One was a lighthouse painted on a pebble, and the other was painted on a pinecone petal! (figure I) The third enclosure was also a painting, but this was a poinsettia on a tiny, tiny pinecone petal! (figure J) Ann must possess patience, a steady hand, and good eyesight as well as talent.

Betty Lange of Queensbury, N.Y., also sent in a nice letter along with photographs of some of her more recent projects. Betty stated that she had been saving uniquely shaped glass bottles for quite some time, although she wasn't sure just why; and then she saw a couple of our shows that gave her an idea. One was a show on which we made and packaged bath salts, and the other was a program on which I talked about and showed a book entitled Glass Painter's Motif Library, which was filled with patterns and designs for painting on glass. Betty got the book, painted some of the designs on some of the bottles (figure K & L) she had been saving, and then filled them with one of our bath salt recipes. She said it enabled her to have lots of Christmas gifts to give to people who loved them!

Betty also did something that we appreciated VERY much...she put her address sticker on her letter AND on each one of the photographs she sent. It is so very helpful in case things get separated, which in the piles of mail we receive, they sometimes do. To this I would also add a request to include your phone number and E-mail address if you have one. It saves us a lot of time when we want to contact you.

And with my thank you, that was the end of today's Shoebox!
