Project by Mary O'Neil. Materials: cardboard video mailers w/front fold-down flaps double-sided tape or adhesive Hot Potatoes velvet ribbon various trims Hot Potatoes rubber stamp iron mister bottle with water hook-and-loop closure tabs black spray paint Steps: 1. Spray paint the box black for a good finished look. Let it dry. 2. Measure out the trims and ribbon to cover box. 3. Emboss all velvet (see instructions below). 4. Attach double-sided tape to back of all ribbons. 5. Fold box on all score lines, and then begin to attach ribbon (figure A). 6. Use other trims to cover any unsightly ends (figure B). 7. To reinforce the closure, cut a piece of cardboard in the shape of a triangle. Extend the bottom (figure C). Place it at the end of a piece of embossed ribbon and fold the ends of the ribbon over, securing with double-sided tape (figure D). 8. Wrap the closure ribbon around the box, tuck the bottom of the ribbon into the inside of the box, and secure the closure with hook-and-loop tape (figure E). As you cover, try to disguise unfinished ends by folding over and tucking to the inside of the box. Velvet Embossing: Acetate/rayon velvet is absolutely the best and I would not use anything else! Silk and rayon work but are tricky to deal with; avoid nylon, polyester or washable velvets. A cheap iron with steam holes just around the edge works great. You want as few steam holes as possible, but I discourage you from buying a craft or travel iron. Use large, bold stamps without a lot of little details that won't show up. Hot Potatoes rubber stamps are made to not melt from the heat of the iron. Lightly mist the wrong side of the fabric. Place the stamp image rubber side up on your work surface or ironing board. Lay the fabric right side down against the stamp image. Now press the iron (set on high or cotton) to the fabric and press down (figure F). Count to 20 and lift iron up carefully (figure G). If there is any dampness, press again, but never touch or move fabric. Hold the iron over the entire stamp surface and avoid letting the steam holes hit the design areas as they will make an impression as well. To avoid this you can place a press cloth or even tin foil or paper where steam holes might interfere with the design. The embossed velvet will hold up to dry cleaning!
