    Viewer Nancy Sousa of Stonington, Conn., sent in a wonderful idea for a Christmas gift to make. It is inexpensive, personal (because you make it yourself), and something almost everyone can use. Size, color and age is unimportant.

    What is it?

    A small desk calendar with every month of the year on a different card that you compose on your computer, print on your printer, stamp with your rubber stamps, and slip into a clear Lucite frame. Nancy said that she started giving these as gifts a couple of years ago and they have become very, very popular.

    Materials:

    4" x 6" stand-up Lucite frame
    card stock
    rubber stamps, stickers or stencils, etc.
    computer and printer

    Steps:

    1. Purchase the frame before making the calendar. The frames are available with single or double photo spaces and made to stand vertically or horizontally (figure A). Nancy’s frame was a 4" x 6" single vertical frame.

    2. Design and print onto card stock the 12 months, remembering to print them in the direction of the frame and allowing space for decorating (figure B).

    3. Cut each month to fit the frame.

    4. Decorate each month as desired with rubber stamps, stickers or stencils--or draw your own designs (figure C). You may make additional copies on a copy machine or make each set personalized for each recipient.

    ...Not out of the Shoebox but on loan from guest Kriss Weber was the silly snowman that she made by stacking three mini flower pots and painting them as a snowman. The bottom pot was his body, the second was his scarf and face, and the top pot was painted black for his hat. It was very cute.
