  • Glitzy Beaded Candles
  • From "Carol Duvall Show"
    episode CDS-1464F

    PHOTO
This time it’s not the candles we are making but the decorations on the outside. If you like glitter and sparkle you should like these.

    Materials:
    three-inch diameter candles*
ultra fine glitter – gold, silver and/or dark green
    no-hole beads
    9" x 12" sheets of industrial strength double-sided adhesive*
    cotton ball or square
    rubbing alcohol
    X-Acto craft knife
    piece of paper
piece of card stock or index card

    * Larger candles can be used but tapers are not recommended.
    * This is the same adhesive that comes in tape form (see resource information at the end of the directions). You may find it in sheets at your rubber stamp store. It is very important that you use this industrial strength tape as any other will often not hold the beads securely. This tape is also heat resistant.

    Steps:

    1. Dab a bit of rubbing alcohol on the cotton ball or square and wipe candle clean of any oil from your hands.

    2. Draw a pattern on a piece of card stock. In our case I drew a pine tree. Cut out.

    3. Cut a length of paper to fit around the candle both in height and length. Allow for about 1/2-inch overlap on the length. Cut a piece of the double-sided adhesive the same size (figure A).

    4. Draw a line down one side of the wrap around pattern piece to allow for the 1/2-inch overlap then place the cut out tree on this strip to determine where you want the tree to be and how many will fit. In this case I determined to use four.

    5. Repeat this placement on the strip of adhesive. Place one tree on the adhesive, tape it down to hold, and with a sharp craft knife trace around the tree (figure B). Cut through the top layer of protective peel-off coating only. Do not peel it off yet.

    6. Repeat the placement of the tree pattern, tape and trace around with the craft knife until four trees have been traced (figure C).

    7. Pull up on the rose-colored protective layer removing it and the adhesive from the white backing. The cut trees should stay in place in the peeled off portion (figure D).

    8. The adhesive is now exposed on the back side. Apply this to the candle pressing the rose-colored layer smooth (figure E). Do it a bit at a time because if it gets wrinkled in the application it will be difficult to undo.

    9. When the candle is completely and smoothly covered carefully peel off the rose colored layer from one of the trees exposing the adhesive (figure F).

    10. Spoon green glitter over the exposed area (figure G) or roll that portion of the candle in the glitter. With a brush, carefully brush away any excess glitter outside the tree outline. Continue around the candle until all four trees are glittered.

    11. Carefully remove the remaining rose-colored layer so that the adhesive is exposed on the entire rest of the candle (figure H).

    12. Roll slowly in a container of the tiny, clear glass, no-hole beads (figure I). Decorating done!

    Variation (figure J)
Cut a length of the industrial strength adhesive to go around the candle. Peel off the white backing to expose the adhesive and apply it to the candle. Peel off the rose-colored layer, exposing the adhesive. Place several pre-cut stars of the tape on the candle. Do not peel off the rose-colored layer. Roll candle in tiny, clear, no-hole beads. Brush off any excess. Peel off the rose-colored layer from the stars to expose the adhesive. Cover the star shapes with either gold or silver glitter or with tiny, gold, no-hole beads.
