Shoebox: Christmas Chain & Light Bulb Ornaments

What a pretty Christmas chain Francine Boyer of Los Angeles, Calif., sent in to the Shoebox. It was made like those paper chains we all made in grade school but this was of brightly colored Christmas fabrics and what a difference that made! I’ve seen these in catalogs and admired them but not the price.

Francine made hers by first selecting several different cotton fabric patterns and cutting them into workable-sized pieces. These she ironed to fusible webbing and then cut the fabric into 2" x 6" long strips. Francine then pulled the strips through one of those bias tape makers which folded the strips into thirds lengthwise however you can do that by hand if you do not have one of the bias tape folders. Iron the strips so they hold their creases and stay together and then make the chain using glue to hold the ends together. Very pretty. Very festive.

Sally Sega of New Milford, Conn., sent in a couple light bulb ornaments that impressed all of us. They were remarkably rich looking in spite of their humble origins. Sally covered the screw end of each bulb with dark green raffia and painted the entire bulb. One was done in dull gold and the other was white. On the white she glued a beautifully cut out sprig of greenery and added a small pine cone with a very pretty ribbon bow. The gold bulb featured nothing but a beautiful gold and red plaid bow. They were very plain and very handsome.
