Roger Cook shows a homeowner how the brick stairs in front of his house have created a blistering "microclimate," that has caused damage to an adjacent dwarf alberta spruce tree. They remove the old shrub, dig a larger hole, amend the soil, and plant a heat-tolerant yew. Then Roger, Kevin O'Connor, Tom Silva, and Richard Trethewey examine an unfamiliar object and try to guess how it is used. Afterward, Tom improves the ventilation in an attic by installing a solar-powered roof fan for a homeowner.
