Are your lawn tools spread out all over the garage? You can organize them with a 30-gallon trash can and a custom-made lid. Materials: 30-gallon (or larger) round plastic garbage can 3/4" plywood, large enough to cover the garbage can Four scrap 2"x4" blocks Drill, with hole saw Jigsaw String Pushpin Pencil Safety glasses - Measure the inside diameter of the trash can (figure A).
- Use a string, a pencil and a pushpin to transfer the measurement to a scrap piece of plywood. Tie a loop in the end of the string to hold the pencil. Measuring from the far end of the loop, tie a knot in the string at a distance equal to half the trashcan's diameter. Tie another knot an inch past the first knot (figure B).
- Push a pin through the first knot and into the middle of the plywood (figure C).
- Use the string and pencil to draw a circle around the pin. Keep the pencil straight up and down and the string taut (figure D). Don't pull too hard, or you'll pull the pin out of the wood.
- Push the pin through the second knot, and repeat the procedure to draw a larger circle. Cut around the larger circle with a jigsaw.
- Cut holes in the circular piece of plywood, using a hole saw (figure E).
- Attach four scrap 2" by 4" blocks to the underside of the circular piece so they're about 1/2" from the inside edge of the first circle you drew (figure F). Space the blocks evenly around the circle so they'll hold the lid in place.
