Scrap lumber in your workshop isn't just messy; it can also create a safety hazard. If the walls in your workshop are unfinished and allow access to the wall studs, you can store long pieces of lumber between the studs. Materials:
2" x 4" lumber 1" x 4" lumber Drill Screws - Cut a 2" by 4" block about 8" long, and notch out a section 4" long and 1 1/4" deep to form a catch (figure A).
- Cut a 1" by 4" board about 17" long so that it fits over two adjacent wall studs (figure B).
- Drill pilot holes in the thick side of the 2" by 4", and attach it to a wall stud (figure C).
- Drill a hole in the middle of one end of the 1" by 4", and screw it to the adjacent wall stud to form a gate (figure D). Leave the screw loose enough that the board can pivot freely.
- Stack wood between the wall studs, and keep it in place with the gate.
Tip: Use a 4" piece of PVC pipe in a cardboard box to store garden tools and long thin pieces of molding. Cut several pieces so that they're just taller than the box, and set them on end in the box as tightly as you can (figure E).
