In this segment, Ryan will be installing the modular storage units. These units come in all variety of sizes and shapes. This particular unit is 84" tall with three fixed and two adjustable shelves.

The modular units are put together using the "cam-and-lock" system. You have a cam screw and cam lock, and when you put the two panels together and twist that cam lock it locks everything together nice and tight (seen here).

After day one of the project, here's a shot of Ryan with the finished modular cabinets.

Note: Click here for a materials list and complete instructions without images.

Time: 14 hours over two days.

    Difficulty Rating: It's rated a 2 on a scale of 1 to 5.

    Materials for Complete Project:

Modular cabinets and shelving (pre-ordered kit)
    15" x 8' slotted wall panels (pre-ordered)
    PVC flooring tiles
    Storage accessories
    Stud finder (magnetic or electronic)
    Drill with bits and drivers
    Phillips screwdriver
    Rubber mallet
    Level
Anchors for both block and drywall
    Table saw or jigsaw
    Utility knife (optional)

    Assembling the Modular Storage Units

Note: The particular cabinets used for this project are made of high-density particle board covered with melamine. Always try to find out if the melamine is thermofused or laminated paper. Thermofused is preferred because it's more water and scratch resistant and won't absorb moisture.

    1. Lay out the panels and hardware that come with the unit (figure A).

    2. Put in the cam screws along the bottom, middle and top.

    3. Insert cam locks into the holes pre-drilled in the shelves.

    4. Turn the lock until the arrow points directly toward the cam screw (figure B).

    5. Put the panels together using the cam screws.

    6. Repeat the process until all sides and shelves are connected.

    7. Flip the cabinet over, mark the spot for cleat pilot holes and drill with 1/8" bit.

    8. Snug cleat under the rear of the shelf and attach using #8 (2") screws (figure C).

    9. Flip the cabinet back over and attach two steel support brackets into the upper corners (figure D). This gives the unit more lateral stability.

    10. Screw in the adjustable metal legs (figure E).

Tip: It's important to use adjustable legs when installing cabinets in a garage because of uneven floors and moisture. You want to be able to keep the cabinets "off" the floor.

    11. Install an aluminum leg stabilizer along the front edge of each shelf. These will help prevent the shelving from sagging and protect the edges from damage.

    12. Adjust the legs to get the cabinet level.

    13. Attach the cabinet through cleats into studs in the wall with screws that go at least 1" into the studs. This will make the cabinet as secure as possible.

    14. Put in adjustable shelves that rest on pins inserted into the pre-drilled holes.

    15. Attach hinges and put the doors on. The hinges come in two parts: one part goes on the door and the other goes right on the cabinet (figure F).

    16. Next, Ryan decided to utilize a base cabinet with a drawer (figure G) on the side of the large modular unit.

    17. Screw the side bracket onto the side panel.

    18. Attach the slide to the brackets.

    19. Before the drawer goes in, attach the cabinet to the wall and drive a couple of screws into the next cabinet as well for stability.

    20. For the drawer, attach one metal side to the 5/8" thick bottom with screws -- repeat on the other side.

    21. Attach the back of the drawer to the bottom.

    22. The front attaches by using two brackets that fit over the front edge (figure H) -- screw into place.

    23. Add the handles.

Note: Another unique element to this modular storage system is the use of an easy-track rail system. There's a notch cut in the back of the cabinet, then a rail (figure I) gets attached to the wall and the cabinet slides right onto the rail for support.

    Installing the Hanging Cabinets

    1. Level the rail and screw directly into the studs.

    2. Attach the rail so the top will be level with the other cabinets.

    3. Hang the cabinet onto the rail.

    4. Install the rest of the cabinets.

    5. Place the maple work surface over the two base cabinets. Screw it in place with a few screws underneath.
