Closet organizers can be extremely versatile. The shelves are adjustable, and you can usually choose from several cabinet options, including drawers, shoe racks and sliding baskets. Before you begin your installation, think about how the child will use the organizer. Place hanging rods within easy reach. And be sure to measure your closet first and buy the proper size: closet-organizer kits come in different sizes. Materials:
Closet-organizer kit Measuring tape Drill with 1/4" bit Level Pencil Hacksaw Phillips-head screwdriver - Remove everything from the closet, including the doors and existing shelves (figure A).
- Patch any holes with spackling compound (figure B) or other appropriate filler, and paint the closet (figure C).
- Measure 2" from the closet ceiling, and mark the wall.
- Mark the wall for the hanging tracks. Make a level line at the top of the closet where the tracks will be mounted. Hold the track against the line, and mark holes for drilling. Try to arrange the mounting holes so that they'll be in front of wall studs. Otherwise you'll need to use toggle bolts.
- Hang the tracks using an adapter, spacing them about 24" from center to center (figure D). If you want the shelves to support more weight, place the tracks closer together.
- Begin installing the shelf brackets (figure E). The first shelf should be about 42" from the floor.
- Lay the shelves in place, snap the hanger-bar supports in place (figure F ), and snap the hanger rod in place.
