Many houses have remote-control garage-door openers, and lots of cars use remote-control locking systems, but did you know you can install a remote-control deadbolt on your front door? Some systems allow you to open the garage door, turn on the lights, and open the deadbolt with a remote control that fits on your keychain. (Note: Remote-control systems have a manual override to allow regular key access.)

    Materials:

    Remote-control deadbolt kit
Drill, with drill bits and a Phillips driver bit
    Phillips- and flat-head screwdrivers
    Safety glasses

    1. Remove the face from your existing deadbolt (figure A). You may be able to leave the latch in place if it fits the new lock.

    2. Use the template provided with your kit to drill pilot holes in the door (figure B).

    3. Temporarily insert the tailpin into the latch, and extend the latch by turning the key (figure C). Remove the tailpin.

    4. Run the LED wiring (figure D) under the latch and through the door (figure E).

    5. Insert the tailpin into the latch. Run the LED wire through the mounting plate, and attach the mounting plate (figure F).

    6. Connect the LED wires to the power board, and install the power board (figure G). Leave the batteries out when installing the power board.

    7. Install the batteries. The unit will beep to let you know that the installation is correct. Change the batteries once a year.

    8. Press the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously so that the system can determine which way the key needs to turn to lock the door.

    9. Press and hold a remote-control button, and press and release the learn button on the power board (figure H). The system will beep when it has registered the signal.

    10. Snap the cover in place.
