The earlier kids learn about fire safety, the better. Here, Lieutenant Donnell Campbell of the Cobb County (Atlanta) Fire Department spends a day teaching fire safety basics to a group of children at a fire safety house.

At a local fire safety house, these kids are learning lessons to last a lifetime. Here, the children are participating in a staged "nighttime" fire escape.
Here are a few of the fire safety basics the children learned: - Keep combustibles at least three feet away from an open flame (for example, a fireplace).
- Test smoke detectors once a month by pressing the test button. To test for smoke sensitivity, stand near the detector, light a match and blow out the flame. Hold the smoking match near the detector. It should go off.
- Change batteries in smoke and fire alarms twice a year. (Lieutenant Campbell recommends changing the batteries when setting your clocks in autumn and spring.)
- Develop a fire escape plan. If you smell smoke, stay low and follow your fire escape plan. Use the wall as a guide as you crawl to the exit. Always check doors with the back of your hand. If the door is hot, alter your escape route and find another window or door for your exit.
