Preserve fond memories of graduation with a folding mortarboard cap and tassel keepsake. It's so cute you'll forget how difficult it was to keep the real thing on your head!

The mortarboard cap, made with two pieces of black cardstock, holds a reduced size graduation announcement framed by favorite tiny graduation photos.

    Download the Graduation Keepsake template.

Note: Print the template at 100 percent to use as a guide, or enlarge 150 percent to use as a full-size template.

    Materials:

    graduation keepsake template (see, above)
graduation invitation and small graduation photos
two sheets of black card stock
one sheet of card stock for the inside (we used blue)
    ruler
    pencil
    straightedge
    craft scissors
craft knife and self-healing cutting mat
    glue stick
    spray adhesive
    two black buttons, shank style
    small binder clamp
    black perle cotton
    embroidery needle
    18" lightweight black cord
    black tassel

    1. Two pieces of black cardstock, sandwiched together, form the mortarboard cap that encloses the graduation memorabilia. To begin, measure and cut one piece of black cardstock into an 8-1/2" square.

    2. Draw light guidelines, shown as dashed gray lines on the template, on the 8 1/2" square cardstock. These will help with proper alignment of the decorated card that goes in the middle.

    3. Cut a piece of cardstock for the decorated card, 5-3/8" square. We used blue for our card.

    4. Place the colored card on the black card stock, lining the points of the card up with the midpoint guidelines drawn on the cardstock (figure A). Refer to the template for clarification. Lightly trace around the colored card stock, then set aside.

    5. Use a straightedge to lightly draw fold lines about 1/16" outside the colored card lines. The fold lines are shown in red on the template.

    6. Use a craft knife and straightedge to lightly score each of the four fold lines. This will prevent the card stock from tearing when folded.

    7. Carefully fold the card stock, with the scored edges at the outside of the folds.

    8. Mark the button placement (figure B) on the inside of the folded card stock. For reinforcement, glue a small square of scrap cardstock where each button will be attached.

    9. To attach the buttons, poke two small holes in the card stock for each button, and sew in place with a double strand of perle cotton, tied at the inside.

    10. Apply spray adhesive to the backside of the folded card stock, then smooth in place on the other piece of card stock. Use scissors or the craft to cut away the excess paper. Use a small binder clamp to hold the two layers of paper together at button corner.

    11. Carefully fold the entire piece, following the folds already in place on the inside piece of card stock.

    12. Decorate the inside card with graduation photos and a copy of the graduation announcement, then glue it in place inside the folding graduation cap. We reduced a standard graduation announcement (4-3/8" x 5-7/8") 70 percent, which produced a copy about 3" x 4".

    13. Tie lightweight black cord to the tassel and to the button at the top of the graduation cap. The cord will hold the folded keepsake together, so make sure to tie the cord facing away from the corner button (figure C).

    14. Fold the cap and loop the cord around the button closure at the front.
